Connecticut Gopher Control

How to Identify a Gopher Problem

A gopher problem can be a detriment to the plants in your yard and garden, and it can be difficult to get rid of gophers yourself. You may have seen a gopher tunnel running through your vegetable garden. Besides their tunnels and mounds they leave in your yard or garden, (discussed in detail below), here are some ways to identify a gopher in your yard so you can start to get rid of gophers.

Gophers are rodents that can range from 6-10 inches long, depending on the species. They have short tails and long front incisors, which they use to chew and eat plant bulbs and roots. Their fur color can range from brown, yellow or gold, and orange. Unlike the mole's pointed nose, gophers have a rounded muzzle.

They are plant root eaters, so you might see them poke their heads above ground in search of food or as they look out for danger. But you're not likely to see them out of their deep tunnels.

Gopher Control versus Mole Control

Don't misidentify a gopher control problem versus a mole control problem. The main differences between gophers versus moles include their appearance, their food sources, and the shape and depth of the tunnels they dig, the gopher holes they leave, and the mounds of dirt they pile.

Here are the main differences between moles and gophers:

Moles

  • Mounds look like circular piles of sand or dirt
  • Dig extensive tunnels, usually close to the surface
  • Food sources include grubs and insects
  • Pointy noses and shovel-shaped forepaws

Gophers

  • Mounds are conical shape and have a plug, or dirt they use to cover the hole as a doorway for entry
  • Dig deep tunnels near tree roots, plant roots or bulbs, and gardens
  • Food sources are plants and only plants. They start with the roots and eventually pull the entire plant to a food storage tunnel deep underground
  • Visible eyes, large front teeth, food pouch in both cheeks

Reasons to Treat a Gopher Problem immediately

If you suspect a gopher control problem, professional help for gopher removal is the best way to get rid of gophers. They cause damage to trees and plants, no matter the type or size. They eat plant roots and eventually drag it down and eventually consume the entire plant. They cause damage to underground pipelines, including sprinkler or irrigation pipes, electrical pipes, gas pipes, or other pipes running through or around your property.

Gopher bites are rare, however, if you are bitten by a gopher, go to the hospital to consult with a physician immediately.

While it can be a good idea to use gopher traps, live traps, poison bait, and other gopher repellent ideas to cover an exit point, Fox Pest Control has the safest and best solutions. Wildlife technicians can safely remove gophers. Call today to handle your gopher problem quickly and safely.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
