5 Things to Prevent a Termite Infestation

1. Repair and Prevent Moisture Damage

Many types of termites are attracted to wood with moisture damage, so check the water pipe access cabinets throughout your home for any leakages. Inspect the faucets, toilets, and drains for any leakages or pooling as well.

The outside of any house can also have water problems, so check and correct any drainage issues, making sure that gutters have pipes that pour the water away from the foundation and that the water drains completely out of your yard and away from the foundation. Be sure to inspect your A/C unit and exterior pipes for any leakages and repair all damages as soon as possible.

One of the most overlooked areas of infestations is the rooftop. Make sure your gutters are clear of leaves and other debris. Termites, especially Formosan termites, can release flying swarmers every year that could find leafy gutters a comfortable spot to start a colony.

2. Keep Woodpiles Away from the House

Woodpiles are very convenient to have near the house during the winter, but unfortunately, they are a major attractant for termites. Especially if the wood is piled directly against the house, the termites could find a way inside and set up a home in your walls.

The best way to minimize the risk of an infestation is to pile firewood at least 20 feet away from the homeon a metal platform raised at least one foot off the ground. You might also consider covering the wood with a tarp or a plastic covering for further protection, but always make sure the wood stays completely dry — damp wood could be a strong termite attractant.

3. Trim Tree Branches and Bushes

Shrubberies or tree limbs that are touching the house could provide a convenient termite highway into your home. Bushes should be spaced at least three feet away from one another and cut back at least a foot from the side of the house.

Tree limbs that overhang above the roof or touch the house at all should be trimmed back so that the nearest branch is at least a few feet away from the house and doesn’t overhang at all.

4. Clear Away Branches, Leaves, and Other Plant Debris

Regularly check your yard for any fallen leaves, branches, or other wood debris and clear it away as soon as possible.

Wood mulch around your home is dangerous when used excessively. Deep piles of mulch can provide termites with ideal temperature and moisture conditions, so rake mulch at least one foot away from the foundation and keep the mulch shallow. Never allow any wood debris to touch the side of the house or the foundation.

5. Look to the Professionals for Help

All of these precautions will help keep your home from drawing termites nearby, but they won’t stop them from coming or prevent an infestation. If you’re afraid you might have an infestation or you simply want to prevent one, call the professionals right away.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
