3 Do-it-Yourself Cockroach Management Methods

German roaches are some of the most common types of cockroaches in the United States, and no matter the season, they could have taken up residence inside your Connecticut home right now.

Another species is the American roach, which has a reddish-brown color and can grow up to 2 inches long in the right conditions. Either of these species could contaminate your food with diseases

No one wants cockroaches infesting their homes, but there are risks associated with a cockroach presence in your home, too. They leave egg cases called ootheca; they shed their exoskeletons about six times before adulthood. They also hide their feces, which looks like black pepper dots, until any or all of their leavings eventually causes an allergic reaction or asthma attacks.

So read here to learn exactly what you can do to make sure your home is safe and comfortable again and that you remain on guard against an infestation, so get rid of roaches yourself.

Control Cockroaches with These Steps

1. Seal Home Entry Points

The German cockroach is the smallest of the more common types, usually around 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, so very few homes are entirely safe. But there are some things you can do now to ensure your home is as safe as possible.

Use silicone caulking to fill gaps and cracks around doors, windows, and sill plates. Do the same for your food cupboards as well, and make sure that you use personal protective equipment when you examine these areas.

2. Regular Home Sanitation

Cockroach food sources include everything humans eat, with a number of disgusting additions. They eat milk and dairy products, grain products, meat products, and sugary and starchy foods like fruit and vegetables. But they also can consume human waste, fingernails, dead skin and dandruff, and blood, and they can live for months without food.

So, establish a regular cleaning regiment to make sure they don't have anything to eat, and seal your food in airtight containers, like glass containers with snap-seal lids. Clean the cracks and crevices where they might hide, under appliances like the stove and refrigerator, and any cracks and crevices you can reach.

If you're confident that your house is infested, regularly invade potential and positively-identified roach hiding places. Use grease-fighting dish soap mixed with water when you clean these areas, and leave no crevice unwashed, no upturned carpet unexamined, and wash exceptionally thoroughly. You might even consider purchasing an automatic vacuum system that can run at night when cockroaches are most active.

3. Get Rid of Cockroaches

There are a number of over-the-counter products that will aid you to eliminate cockroach infestations. Boric acid, insect growth regulators, diatomaceous earth, and gel bait set in bait stations will kill roaches in various ways.

Insect growth regulators reduce the roach populations by preventing the cockroaches from growing and progressing to full adulthood and sexual maturity. This is one of the more effective over-the-counter roach-icides available out there.

Boric acid is used in lots of household products, and you can purchase products with boric acid in them from your hardware store. But be careful where you place it, because children, pets, and the elderly could react badly if they inhale it.

Diatomaceous earth is more of a deterrent than an insecticide, but it acts similarly to glass when cockroaches come across it. Light layers of earth and boric acid are more than sufficient if you put them in the right places.

Roach kits from the internet or other outlets are an excellent resource as well -- they contain many of these products, including gel bait and bait stations. Cockroach bait is useful because it doesn't kill them immediately. Still, it is both deadly and attractive to them, and therefore eliminates a vast number of them if placed in effective locations.
